It’s important to note that kittens, including active breeds like Devon Rex, can be just as happy and healthy indoors. Outdoor access is not required for a kitten’s well-being. Our goal is to provide safe, enriching experiences for those who choose supervised outdoor time, while supporting indoor-only lifestyles for cats who thrive inside.

Why Outdoor Safety Matters

Kittens are naturally curious and playful. In the summer, open doors, windows, and backyard access make it easier for a kitten to slip outside and get lost, injured, or encounter hazards like traffic, predators, or toxic plants.

For Devon Rex kittens, this is especially important — their playful nature and limited street-smarts mean they can easily get into trouble outside. Leash training, catios, and outdoor supervision provide controlled ways for kittens to explore while minimizing risk.

While I personally don’t do outdoor leash training with my kittens, it can be beneficial if done correctly. Leash training allows kittens to safely explore the outdoors under supervision, reduces stress, and provides enrichment.

3️⃣ Attach the Leash Gradually

Once your kitten is comfortable in the harness, attach the leash and let them drag it indoors under supervision. This helps them get used to the feel without feeling restrained.

4️⃣ Practice Short Outdoor Sessions

Begin leash training in a safe, enclosed outdoor area like a backyard or patio. Gradually increase the duration as your kitten gains confidence, always supervising closely.

• Supervised Outdoor Access Only: If you plan to take your kitten outside, it’s crucial to differentiate between you taking them outside and allowing them to walk outside on their own. Outdoor safety includes preventing the teaching of “door dashers.”

Use a Carrier for Outdoor Access

Always place your kitten in a secure carrier, pet backpack, or cat stroller and bring them to the designated outdoor area before releasing them. Using a specific carrier for outdoor time teaches your kitten that this is the required method to go outside safely.

Important tips:

• Designate a carrier only for outdoor adventures. Do not use this carrier for trips to the vet or other activities, as consistency helps your kitten understand its purpose.

• Teach your kitten to enter the carrier on their own using treats or positive reinforcement.

• Always bring the carrier with you during outdoor sessions in case your kitten becomes tired, encounters a safety risk (like an aggressive dog), or gets spooked and tries to bolt. This ensures you can safely crate your kitten if needed.

• Avoid Extreme Heat: Kittens can overheat quickly. Provide shaded areas and water, and avoid walking during peak sun hours.

• Check for Hazards: Inspect the area for toxic plants, chemicals, or gaps in fences.

• Use Identification: Even if your kitten is supervised, ensure they are microchipped and wearing a harness with ID tags as an extra safety measure.

• Supervise at All Times: Never leave a kitten unattended outdoors, even in a fenced yard. Kittens can squeeze through small spaces or climb unexpectedly.

Catios: A Safe Outdoor Alternative

For kittens who want fresh air and sunshine without risk, a catio is an excellent solution. Catios are enclosed outdoor spaces designed specifically for cats, providing a secure environment where kittens can explore, play, and observe nature safely.

Benefits of Catios:

• Safer: Kittens cannot escape, get lost, or encounter predators.

• Stress-Free Outdoor Time: Catios provide enrichment and mental stimulation without supervision.

• Prevents Door Dashing: Kittens learn to enjoy the outdoors without associating doors with unsupervised freedom.

However, if someone chooses to leash train their kitten, we ask that extra precautionary steps are taken to ensure the cat is safe at all times. Leash training should never create an indoor-outdoor cat, and careful supervision is essential to prevent the risk of the kitten getting lost, injured, or exposed to dangers outside.
